REINHA.com – Chanting prayers could be heard echoing softly in the night sky of Pantai Besar Village (Wednesday 1 April 2026). Hundreds of Catholics gathered, praying fervently (Study) from the Mater Misericordia Chapel.
Trewa Wednesday is the day when the Semana Santa (Holy Week) mourning period begins on the Wednesday before Maundy Thursday. The atmosphere that was previously quiet in prayer suddenly became boisterous, where dozens of young people dragged corrugated iron along the paved road. This ritual was intended to commemorate the story of the arrest of Jesus Christ and the start of a period of silence in Larantuka City.
In the tradition of Catholics in the Larantuka Diocese, Trewa means sounds or commotion. As a sign of entering an atmosphere where some joyful activities begin to be limited during the Tri Holy Days.
