POC from IKTL in Maumere: Turning Waste into a Blessing for Nebe Village Farmers
REINHA.com – Piles of vegetable scraps, kitchen waste and fish innards that usually end up in the trash now have new value for the people of Nebe Village, Talibura District, Sikka Regency. Through the 2026 Real Work Lecture (KKN) program, IKTL students present training in making Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC) and compost as an environmentally friendly solution that also supports community agricultural productivity.
The activities carried out in Nebe Village depart from the condition of the community, most of which depend on the agricultural and horticultural sectors for their livelihoods. Seeing the potential for abundant organic waste in the household environment, KKN students introduced a simple but effective way to process this waste into fertilizer with high use value.
In this training, people are taught to use various types of organic waste such as food waste, vegetable waste, fish offal and other kitchen waste to be processed into liquid organic fertilizer and compost. The two types of POC introduced to the public are POC made from fish waste and POC made from vegetable waste.
Chairman of the Nebe Village Farmers Group, Mr. Yudas, together with members of the horticulture group and a number of other farmer groups seemed enthusiastic about participating in every stage of the training. Starting from the process of mixing ingredients, fermentation techniques, to how to use fertilizer on plants are explained directly by KKN students.
The training atmosphere was lively. Residents not only listened to the material provided, but also actively asked and discussed the application of organic fertilizer on their agricultural land. The high level of public interest shows that the need for alternative fertilizers that are cheap and easy to make is still very large among farmers.
“Training like this really helps us. The ingredients are easy to find and can be made at home,” said Mr. Yudas.
The community’s enthusiasm even exceeded the implementation team’s expectations. After the group training was completed, a number of field farmers and paddy fields specifically asked for further assistance so they could practice making POC independently. This request is an indicator that the knowledge shared is truly accepted and felt useful by the community.
Responding to this request, KKN students enthusiastically provided additional individual training to residents who needed it. In this follow-up mentoring session, an innovation in making POC made from eggs and coconut water which has good nutritional content to support plant growth was also introduced.
The impact of this activity is starting to be felt by the people of Nebe Village. Apart from gaining new skills in processing organic waste, farmers also get alternative fertilizers that are more economical and easy to produce using materials available around them. On the other hand, the use of organic waste helps reduce environmental pollution and encourages a more sustainable lifestyle.
The POC and compost making work program initiated by IKTL KKN students is a real example of how science can be applied directly to answer community needs. From waste that was previously considered useless, new hope was born for agriculture in Nebe Village. A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm.
